Early Sexual Trauma


A one-day interdisciplinary conference offering theoretical, clinical, and experiential insight into the phenomenology, impact, and treatment of early sexual trauma.  


Keynote Speaker:

 

Mary Gail Frawley-O’Dea, Ph.D.:  Clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and trauma specialist, Dr. Frawley-O’Dea is internationally recognized for her work in the field of early sexual abuse.  She is the co-author of Treating The Adult Survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Psychoanalytic Approach; author of Perversion of Power: Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church; and co-editor of Predatory Priests, Silenced Victims: The Sexual Abuse Crisis and the Catholic Church.  Former Executive Director of the Trauma Treatment Center, Manhattan Institute of Psychoanalysis, Frawley-O’Dea is the author of  numerous professional articles and has conducted seminars and workshops on sexual abuse in this country and abroad.  She is quoted widely in the press about sexual abuse and appeared in the Oscar nominated documentary film, Deliver Us From Evil.  Currently, she has a private practice in Matthews, NC and is faculty and supervisor at the Carolina Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training in Charlotte.



The Rev. Pamela Cooper-White, Ph.D. is Professor of Pastoral Theology, Care and Counseling at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia.  She is recipient of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors’ 2005 national award for “Distinguished Achievement in Research and Writing,” and the Samaritan Counseling Center of Philadelphia’s 2007 “Spirit Award” for community service.  She holds two Ph.Ds from Harvard University and the Institute for Clinical Social Work, Chicago.  Cooper-White is the author of four books, including  Many Voices: Pastoral Psychotherapy and Theology in Relational Perspective (2006),  Shared Wisdom: Use of the Self in Pastoral Care and Counseling (2004),  and The Cry of Tamar: Violence Against Women and The Church’s Response (1995), which won the 1995 Top Ten Books Award from the Academy of Parish Clergy.  She has published numerous scholarly and professional articles in pastoral theology, especially in the areas of postmodern, psychoanalytic, and feminist theology in dialogue with both theology and clinical practice.  An Episcopal priest and pastoral psychotherapist, Dr. Cooper-White is a Certified Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and currently serves as Publications Editor of the Journal of  Pastoral Theology.



Lida Morawetz Jeck, MD. is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist in practice in Durham, North Carolina.  She is the Director of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas. (PECC) based in the Raleigh-Durham area.  She is a graduate of Duke Medical School, did her psychiatry residency at the University of North Carolina, and completed her psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas, now a part of PECC.  Dr. Jeck is a past President of the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Society.
